Hide the Word In Your Heart

A co-worker who was teaching Christian leaders in Vietnam shares this experience:I immediately realized that not one of these pastors owned a Bible and that they were waiting to hear from scripture. As I started sharing, one pastor raised his hand. ?Excuse me brother, is that the Bible or is that you?? ?This is scripture,? I answered and immediately the leaders took out a notebook and eagerly started writing every word down. I then understood that this was the only way that they could collect scripture verses. I wanted to cry. As I continued the teaching, the same question came […]

News From Our Missionary to Japan

Hi Pastor Fernando, Thank you for your prayers. The reports are still really sketchy rightnow. We havent heard from some of our pastors or churches in theaffected areas. All of our missionaries are physically fine but onemissionary family has no electricity, gas or water. I have anothermissionary friend going to the area in a couple of days to help withrelief. So the church is starting to mobilize. But pray that we do notlet this oppurtunity slide away from us. While we can do a lot ofsocial good pray that we also bring the gospel and Christ love tothese people in […]

Bad Company Corrupts Good Character

The above quote is found in 1 Corinthians 15:33. It is actually a quote from the Greek poet Menander who lived in 342?291 BC I began reading today the book of Judges. Israel is finally in the land. They at last arrived at the fulfillment of the promise God had made to Abraham four centuries earlier. God Himself gave them victories over their enemies and all they had to do was to be obedient and they would continue to prosper. God had told them specifically,  ?do not associate yourselves with the people of the land, they will turn you away […]

What If Judgement Day Was Really Tomorrow?

This morning my daughter came to me and said, “what is up this guy saying that the world is going to end tomorrow? She was referring, of course, to Harold Camping?s prediction of Judgment Day tomorrow, May 21st 2011. While Jesus could return at any time, his prediction will likely and once again he will be proven to be a false prophet (this is not the first time he predicts dooms day, he did it before in 1994). But what if he was right and judgment day would be in less that twenty-four hours, would you be ready? I explained […]

It must have been over ten years ago! My children were teenagers. We were in Brazil and I ministered at a Full Gospel Business Men’s Convention on David, A Man After God’s Own Heart”. I also interpreted for some American speaker that I don’t recall who for sure. After the convention, we went north to the city of Maceio and spent a week on vacation. It is not easy being a pastor!

Yesterday, I took the afternoon to prepare the material we will be using for the next series of small groups which will be a six-part series in the book of Philippians. I found and meditated in the words of Paul who […]

Day One of the Forty Days in the Word

Today is the first day of our journey! The primary goal of these exercises is to teach healthy spiritual habits that will last you a lifetime. There are four basic components: MEMORIZE:Verses to recall throughout the day reminding you of God’s promises. DEVOTIONAL:Watch or listen to a devotion to help you digest God’s truths in new ways. STUDY METHOD:Meditate on a passage until the Holy Spirit shows you how to apply it. READING:Read scripture to know God better and to hear him speak to you through his word. – MEMORY VERSE FOR THIS WEEK – Let the word of Christ […]

Day 2 of 40 Days In The Word

Today is the second day of our journey together! Remember, this week we will be reading through the Book of Philippians, just four chapters long. As we’ve heard it said before, “it’s not how much of the Bible you get through every day; it’s how deeply the Bible get’s through to you.” This is our goal. The verse for today is Philippians 1:27a (NIV): “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” The majority of the apostle Paul’s letter to the Christians of Philippi consists of a series of exhortations, all of which relate to […]

Day 3 of the 40 Days

Good Morning! Let’s say our memory verse for this week: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Colossians3:16a (NIV) How are you doing in your reading through Phillipians?  What is the Lord speaking to you as you read it through? The verse for today is Philippians 2:13 (NLT):   For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.    As always with Paul, the words are carefully chosen. The word he uses for work and do is the same, the verb energein (we get our word energy from this […]

Day Four of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning! Our weekly memory verse : Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Colossians3:16a (NIV) What is the Lord speaking to you as you read it through? If you haven’t already take this opportunity to journal your journey as God speaks to you through His word. The verse for today is Philippians 3:12b (NLT):   “…I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me”.    Paul, speaking of his present situation, expressed the fact that he had not yet arrived at “perfection”. At the time of him inviting Jesus to be the […]

Day five of 40

Good Morning! Our verse for today is: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Stress can come from any event or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous. Anxiety is a feeling of fear, unease, and worry. In today’s world is so easy for us to be trapped in anxiety. Jesus, however, on the Sermon on the Mount, clearly warned us against such feeling (Matthew 6): ?Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life (25). Can any one of you by worrying […]

Day Six of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning! Our weekly memory verse is : “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly“. Colossians3:16a (NIV) I want to encourage you once again to allow God’s word to dwell richly in your heart and mind. We are reminded in scripture to “take every thought captive”, so when those thoughts of fear and doubt rise up or if that report comes back to you with seemingly insurmountable odds, you will be able to draw strength from the indwelling power of God’s truths which you have allowed to take root in your heart and mind. The verse for today […]

Day 7 of 40

Good Morning! Last time for our memory verse is : “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly“. Colossians3:16a (NIV) Today’s verse is one of the most well known and loved in the book of Philippians: “My God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” 4:19 (NIV)    This week, in one of our devotionals, Paul told the Philippians they were not to be anxious about anything. We also saw how Jesus taught us not to be overwhelmed by worry but rather trust in God to supply what we need. Today, Paul returns […]

Day Eight of 40 Days In The Word

This weeks memory verse is: Psalm 119:18 (NIV) “Open my eyes that I may see wonderfulthings in your law.”  As you continue this week in your devotional time with the Lord, the goal set before us is to read the first seven chapters of The Gospel of Mark (one chapter a day). Now if you have found yourself, this past week, slammed with the busyness of life and have missed a day on this 40 Day journey, do not be disouraged. Focus on today and move forward. To borrow a phrase that Pastor Rick Warren from Saddleback church in Southern […]

Day 9 of 40

Good Morning! The “Picture it” method of BIble meditation that is going to be discussed this week, is a method that works best when we are reading a narrative passage, a story or a parable. The Gospel of Mark contains several stories. We are asking you to read this week the first seven chapters of Mark (you can read one a day or several at one time as long you read seven chapters this week). One beautiful story is found in chapter 3: 1 – 6. “Jesus heas a man with a shriveled hand”  1 Another time Jesus went into […]

Day 10 of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning,  We trust and pray that your week is off to an incredible start. As Pastor shared with us yesterday, the “Picture it” method of Bible meditation is our focus for this week. It is a method that works best when we are reading a narrative passage like an event, story or a parable. Many examples of this are found in The Gospel of Mark. Remember our goal this week is to read the first seven chapters of The Gospel of Mark. Today’s passage is found in Mark 4: 35-41 (NIV). “Jesus calms the storm.” “That day when evening […]

Day 11 of 40

Good Morning, Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” Psalm 119:18 (NIV) This is the memory verse for this week. Please memorize it. I hope you are getting as much from the Gospel of Mark as I am. By now you should have read at least four or five chapter (we need to read seven chapters by Sunday). By now you probably already had your small group so you know what to do in your quiet time. After waiting on God for few seconds and praying a brief prayer asking God to prepare you for […]

Day 12 of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning, Our memory verse for this week is this:  “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” Psalm 119:18 (NIV) We encourage you to memorize it. In addition to this though, really make it your prayer this morning that God would do this very thing for you today and in the days to follow as you seek his direction for your life. Let’s put into practice today what we’ve learned in our small groups:(1) Wait on God: (take a moment & just be quiet).(2) Pray briefly… “God, I asked that you would open my eyes […]

Day 13 of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning, It is three o’clock in the morning. You and your friends are on a boat in the middle of a lake trying to get to the other side. The wind is blowing against you and you are straining at the oars. All of the sudden, you see a figure of a person coming towards you. You think, “it’s gotta be a ghost.”  “Wait a minute, I don’t believe in ghost.” “What is it?” or better yest, “who is it?”. Day 14 of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning, Our memory verse for this week is this: “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” Psalm 119:18 (NIV) This morning as you take a moment to quietly wait before God, come to him with an expectant heart and a willingness to receive His direction for your life today. Meditate on today’s passage of scripture: “Jesus heals a deaf and mute man” (Mark 7:31-37) Remember to put yourself in the story: With which character can you most relate with? What is God saying to you through this story?   I encourage you to write down […]

Day 15 of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning and welcome to the third week of the 40 Days in the Word: This week we are reading Mark 8 through 16 and we are going to use the third devotional method of Bible study – PROBE method – that will be discussed in small groups this week. In order to help you with your Quiet Time, I want to give you some instructions: The purpose of this method is to apply the Word to our lives, that is why our memory verse this week is: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Day 16 of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning and welcome to the third week of the 40 Days in the Word: Today’s passage of scripture is found in: Mark 9:33-35 (NLT) “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of God? “  33 After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?” 34 But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. 35 He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the […]

Day 17 of 40

In this week’s devotional, we are using the PROBE method to meditate in different passages of the Scriptures. We come today to an interesting one. It is found in Mark 10: 17 – 31 when a rich young man came to Jesus and said:  “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” His question is a universal question. What do we have to do to make sure we have eternal life? Jesus not only gave him the answer to the question, albeit not the one he expected, but a great teaching on priorities, self-denial and the character of […]

Day 18 of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning, We’ve been learning together, six different ways to meditate on God’s Word using the “devotional method” of Bible study. Using what Pastor Rick Warren referred to as the “Probe It” method, let’s look at today’s passage of Scripture. Today’s devotional is found in Mark 11:25: 25 “But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.” I have a question for us today? What law (Scriptural truth) guarantees the possibility of accomplishing impossible things? It is the “law of miracles” that guarentees the […]

Day 19 of 40

Good Morning, The PROBE method is a very practical method as we ask questions to apply God’s Word to our lives. Let’s look at the passage for today found in  Mark 14: 3 – 9: 3 While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.  4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold […]

Perhaps Today

You also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” -Matthew 24:44 So I am doing my devotional today (Quiet Time, as Rick Warren calls it). I usually do it together with my wife in the morning but since I had to be in the office earlier, I had to do it by myself (together with her is much better because of among other reasons, the power of agreement taught by Jesus in Matthew 18 and the fact that the married couples have a power of unity). I go to the prayer […]

Day Twenty of 40 Days In the Word

Good Morning, We trust and pray that you’ve had a blessed week so far. This morning, let’s take a moment to look at today’s passage of Scripture. Today’s devotional is found inMark 15:33-39: 33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). 35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” 36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it […]

Day 22 of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning and welcome to the fourth week of the 40 Days in the Word: This week we are reading The Book of James. It is just five chapters long. We will also be using the fourth devotional method of Bible study – the “Paraphrase It” method. We will be discussing this at length in our small groups this week but for now let me share with you just five simple steps that we will be practicing: THE “PARAPHRASE IT!” METHOD OF BIBLE MEDITATION:Step 1:  Read the verse or passage over and over.Step 2:  Think about what God is saying […]

Day 23 of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning! We are using the PARAPHRASE method of bible study this week as we read through the Book of James. The purpose of this method is for you to be able to explain the entire verse or passage in your own words. We want to go beyond just knowing what the Bible says and really understand what the Bible means. So let’s do it together: Let’s do it together: THE “PARAPHRASE IT!” METHOD OF BIBLE MEDITATION:Step 1: Let’s read it two times this passage:“My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and […]

Day 24 of 40 Days In The Word

Good Morning, Here we are in the middle of the week. This week we are reading The Book of James. Using  the “Paraphrase It” method, let’s look at our passage of scripture for today which is found in James 1:22-25. The first verse will sound familiar as it was our memory verse from last week: Let’s look at  James: 1:22-25 (NIV): 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a […]

Day 21 0f 40

Good Morning, We come to the last day we are using the PROBE method of meditation. Today’s passage is the the last chapter of Mark, chapter 16 as we read the story of the Resurrection of Jesus. Read is slowly and probe the passage carefully. Try to visualize (last week’s method) in the passage as the women or the disciples of Jesus. Then ask the three questions: 1) What did this passage mean to them then?2) What are the timeless truths found in it?3) How do they apply to my life now. You will be blessed, I guarantee it and […]

Day 28 of 40 Days In the Word

Good Morning, We pray and trust that God has illuminated His Word in your life these past few weeks. Over the past seven days we’ve set out to read The Book of James. One thing is for certain, “His word will not return to Him void, but it will accomplish what He pleases.”(Isaiah 55:11). As you focus on our Lord today may His truth’s take precedence over your perceptions. In other words, may your focus be on God’s truths not your perceptions. This is our last day of utilizing the “Paraphrase It” method of Bible study. Let’s look at  James […]

Day 29 of 40 Days In The Word

Good morning and welcome to the fifth week of the 40 Days in the Word Devotionals. In Small Groups this week we will be talking about the next two methods of Bible Study and Meditation: The Personalize it and the Pray it methods. They are very simple but also very effective. In the Personalize it method you put your name in place of the pronouns or nouns used in Scripture. For example, when I personalize it John 3:16, it will be like this: For God so loved Fernando that he gave his own and only Son, that if Fernando believes […]
