Day 15 of 40 Days In The Word
Good Morning and welcome to the third week of the 40 Days in the Word:
This week we are reading Mark 8 through 16 and we are going to use the third devotional method of Bible study – PROBE method – that will be discussed in small groups this week.
In order to help you with your Quiet Time, I want to give you some instructions:
The purpose of this method is to apply the Word to our lives, that is why our memory verse this week is:
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”James 1:22 (NIV)
When we read a passage we should ask ourselves three questions:
- What did it mean then?
- What is the timeless truth?
- How does it apply now?
Today we are going to meditate in Mark 8: 34 – 38, Jesus teaches about taking up your cross:
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
Ask the three questions above.
Rick Warren suggests also to use the acronym SPACEPETS to further apply the Word to your life:
S – Is there a sin to confess?
P – Is there a promise to claim?
A – Is there an attitude to change?
C – Is there a command to obey?
E – Is there an example to follow?
P – Is there a prayer to pray?
E – Is there an error to avoid?
T – Is there a truth to believe?
S – Is there something to praise God for?
I pray God will use this passage to speak to you in a special way today.
